The American Lung Association announced on Apr. 30 that its Fight For Air Climb Buffalo will take place on Saturday, May 9 at Sahlen Field in Buffalo. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is open to individuals, families, corporate teams, and firefighters who will climb the stadium steps to support lung health and clean air.
The event aims to raise awareness and funds for nearly 2.4 million New Yorkers living with lung disease. Climbers of all fitness levels aged eight and up are invited to participate by climbing 500 steps in the stadium. Firefighters from across New York will also compete in a Firefighter Challenge during the climb.
Kaelyn Gates, Executive Director for the American Lung Association of Western New York, said, “We’re excited for the community to come together for the Fight For Air Climb Buffalo. Funds raised will go to local services, programs, advocacy and research we provide here in New York.”
Firefighters participating in the challenge face increased risks due to exposure to smoke and chemicals while on duty. These exposures can lead to various lung health issues such as coughs, asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and even cancers affecting the lungs or bronchi.
Registration for participants is $35 with an additional $100 fundraising minimum required. More information about registration can be found at ClimbBuffalo.org.
