Julia Casbarro, an events coordinator at The Ohio State University Alumni Association, described on April 8 her initial doubts about participating in the Health Athlete program. She said she was hesitant when her supervisor suggested the self-help seminar during a particularly busy period at work.
Casbarro’s experience highlights how some staff members may feel uncertain about new wellness initiatives. The Health Athlete program is one of several efforts by Ohio State Health and Discovery to support well-being among university employees and students.
“I just didn't know what to expect,” Casbarro said. “I think it was the fear of the unknown, and then wondering if this will ultimately be worth my time.” She recalled being candid with Josh Winn, who leads the program: “I literally walked in and said to Josh Winn: ‘Good luck trying to win me over on this, because I am in a mood and I'm very sorry.’”
Ohio State Health and Discovery addresses societal issues such as health equity and substance use to promote inclusive well-being, according to the official website. Its academic medical center includes hospitals and outpatient facilities that provide care for both local residents and those beyond central Ohio.
In addition to patient care, Ohio State Health and Discovery seeks advances through research, education, patient care, and community involvement according to its official website. The organization also offers resources on wellness topics including research advances and community health initiatives as reported by its official site.
The broader mission extends across Ohio as well as globally according to its official website, focusing on improving health outcomes through innovation in healthcare delivery, research advancements, educational programs, and outreach activities.
Looking ahead, officials say these types of programs reflect a commitment by Ohio State Health and Discovery toward advancing health not only within the university but also throughout communities locally and worldwide.
