Recruiting experts discussed on Mar. 19 six frequent mistakes that biopharma professionals make when working with recruiters, offering advice on how to improve the job search process.
The topic is important because recruiters can provide valuable insights and advocate for candidates, but certain missteps may hinder a candidate's chances of landing a suitable position.
Steve Raz, founder and owner of Cornerstone Search Group, said that waiting too long to contact recruiters can limit options. "You might not even be thinking of leaving the company, but a position that’s far superior than what you have now is available that meets and tracks with your career goals," Raz said. He recommended staying in touch with recruiters even before actively seeking new employment.
Theo Rowley, associate director and talent sourcing business partner at Novartis, noted that undervaluing recruiter interactions is another mistake. He explained that candidates often do not review information sent by recruiters ahead of calls, which limits their ability to respond effectively. "So, as I say, just use those recruiter conversations to articulate a narrative, but also prepare and make sure that you’re positioning yourself fully too," Rowley said.
Transparency was highlighted as essential by both Raz and Rowley. Job seekers should be open about compensation needs and career motivations so recruiters can better advocate for them. "Share details about your motivations, constraints, your ambitions, what you’re trying to achieve," Rowley said.
Lisa Madden, chief operating officer at The Steely Group, emphasized the importance of being clear about career goals rather than being vague or overly focused on salary alone. "It’s about the total opportunity. It’s the culture... It’s where it’s going to take you next in your career," Madden said.
Raz also cautioned against contacting hiring companies directly before coordinating with recruiters: "Sometimes... an executive may make some calls into a company of people they know, and sometimes that could backfire." He advised working with recruiters to determine the best timing for outreach.
To maximize success with recruiters, both Raz and Madden suggested choosing reputable firms familiar with desired roles and preparing thoroughly for each opportunity. "You have to put everything into it... You have to shine," Madden said.
