The Marcus Foundation awards $14.4 million to create Marcus VITAL Laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine’s Center for Aortic Surgery

Baylor College of Medicine received a $14.4 million research award from The Marcus Foundation to establish the Marcus VITAL (Vascular Intelligence for Translational AI and Learning) Laboratory, according to a Mar. 10 announcement.

The new laboratory will focus on integrating artificial intelligence, advanced imaging, and clinical data to improve precision medicine for patients with complex aortic disease. These conditions are among the most challenging in cardiovascular care.

Located at the Texas Heart Institute at Baylor College of Medicine, the Marcus VITAL Laboratory aims to serve as a model for using data-driven discovery in real-world clinical settings. Dr. Gustavo S. Oderich, chief of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy and director of the Center for Aortic Surgery at Baylor, said, “This work is about providing better care for patients. By harnessing artificial intelligence and the world’s largest aortic datasets, we can better understand disease, personalize treatment and improve outcomes for patients in ways that simply weren’t possible before.”

Frank Blake, chairman of the board of The Marcus Foundation, said, “The Marcus Foundation is proud to support the work Dr. Oderich and his team are advancing at Baylor. Bernie would often say his hope was that he had changed the world for the better. He also believed in the power of people and enabling bold ideas that improve lives. The Marcus VITAL Laboratory is a powerful reflection of his incredible legacy.”

The laboratory will use multidisciplinary approaches such as digital twin modeling, genetic research, clinical trials, and hands-on training programs for future cardiovascular leaders. It will also expand specialized fellowships offering experience in complex aortic procedures.

Greg Brenneman, chair of Baylor College of Medicine’s Board of Trustees, said, “This philanthropic research award represents the very best of what partnership can achieve. Baylor has the people, the platform and the purpose to translate bold ideas into better care for patients. By uniting The Marcus Foundation and Baylor around the values Bernie Marcus championed, this partnership sets in motion progress that will improve lives around the world for years to come.”

Baylor College of Medicine contributes to community service as one of its core missions according to its official website. The college functions independently while engaging in clinical partnerships according to its official website. As an independent health sciences university focused on advancing research, education, patient care, and community service according to its official website, it collaborates in environments promoting integrated health sciences according to its official website. Paul Klotman holds roles as president, chief executive officer, and executive dean at Baylor College of Medicine according to its official website.

Looking ahead, officials say this investment will help advance both patient outcomes and medical education through innovative technology.
