Oral Health Foundation chief executive Dr Nigel Carter announces retirement after decades of service

Dr. Nigel Carter OBE will retire as Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation in March 2026, according to a statement from Professor Tim Newton, President of the charity. Dr. Carter is currently on sick leave and made his decision after discussions with the Board.

Professor Newton stated, "We respect and support his decision and send him our very best wishes." Dr. Carter has served the Oral Health Foundation for over forty years, including roles as Trustee, Chair of the Trustee Board, and for the past 29 years as Chief Executive.

His leadership was recognized with an Order of the British Empire in the 2012 Queen’s Jubilee Honours. During his tenure, he contributed significantly to improving oral health and supporting those involved in this mission.

The Oral Health Foundation operates as a charity focused on oral health education and advocacy, providing free information on topics such as toothbrushing techniques, diet, fluoride use, and gum disease prevention (official website). The organization also drives public awareness through campaigns like National Smile Month to promote good oral health practices and early detection of issues (official website).

According to Professor Newton, "The Oral Health Foundation is in a strong position, with clear strategic priorities, committed partners and an exceptional team." He added that trustees have confidence in the Senior Management Team to provide interim leadership while ensuring continuity across all areas.

The foundation extends its resources internationally by delivering evidence-based information and support in multiple languages (official website). It also works with dental professionals, researchers, policymakers and international organizations to advance oral health knowledge (official website).

Professor Newton encouraged colleagues or friends who wish to share memories or messages about Dr. Carter to contact pr@dentalhealth.org.

He noted that "the Board is committed to appointing a new Chief Executive in due course and to ensuring a smooth and considered transition in leadership," aiming to build on Dr. Carter’s legacy.

Dr. Carter said: "I look back with real pride on all that the Oral Health Foundation and its people have achieved, and it has been a genuine privilege to be part of that journey. While stepping back means I won’t be directly involved in our current projects, I have complete confidence in the team to continue building our work and impact. I will always value the memories and achievements we’ve shared, and I look forward to seeing the charity continue to flourish under its next phase of leadership."

Further updates about succession plans are expected as they become available.
