Baylor psychiatrist highlights risks associated with rising sports gambling trends

Gambling is becoming more common, especially in sports, as access increases through technology. While some see sports betting as entertainment, it can result in significant financial losses and addiction. Dr. Asim Shah, professor and executive vice chair in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, outlined concerns about this trend.

“Gambling is something in which you put your money (or something of value) for the intent of winning something,” said Shah. “The theory behind gambling is that it brings thrill and adrenaline rush, which leads to dopamine release of neurotransmitters.”

Shah explained that people are drawn to sports gambling for excitement, involvement with their favorite teams, and potential financial gain. He noted that companies promoting sports betting platforms create enthusiasm among fans, increasing participation.

“People love sports and like to bet on underdogs because they associate themselves with that,” Shah said.

Many begin betting casually during social events such as watching major games with friends. What starts as a lighthearted activity can grow into a habit after initial wins.

“People start it as something fun or with a little peer pressure, then it grows and can become pathological: betting online, spending excess money and using the credit card more than you should,” Shah said.

Warning signs of problematic gambling include wagering more than one can afford to lose, dishonesty about expenditures, excessive focus on bets or game outcomes, accumulating financial losses, neglecting work or home responsibilities, depression, and irritability.

“It has become easier to gamble because of technology. People who are into gambling may not be able to come out of it and can lose everything,” Shah said.

Shah advises those considering sports betting to be aware of these warning signs before starting. The convenience of online platforms makes access immediate but also increases risk for addiction. He also noted that while many states regulate gambling activities, it remains illegal in Texas.
