FARE documentary on food allergy receives awards at Indie Short Fest

FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) announced that its short documentary, “A World Unaware: When Every Bite Matters,” has received recognition from the Indie Short Fest, an international film festival based in Los Angeles. The documentary was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award for direction in the Documentary Short category and also received an Honorable Mention for production.

The film was selected from submissions representing 26 countries and was among the top entries recognized as award winners. According to FARE, this recognition highlights the importance of addressing food allergy awareness.

“We’re incredibly honored to have the film recognized in this environment among such notable work,” said Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of FARE. “For too long, food allergy has been dismissed, minimized, or misunderstood. ‘A World Unaware’ confronts that culture head-on and makes clear that awareness and accountability are matters of life and death, while illustrating the transformative impact of community.”

Produced by FARE in partnership with Macroscopic, “A World Unaware” examines responsibility and education around food allergies. The documentary follows two families—the Bridens and the Mannons—and explores how a lack of understanding about food allergies can have serious consequences. It also highlights the role of education and community support.

Dr. Poblete added, “Recognition like this helps ensure these stories are seen, heard, and taken seriously—exactly where change begins.”

The trailer for “A World Unaware” premiered at the AmDocs Film Festival opening event in spring 2025. The film later had a public screening in Los Angeles and premiered at FARE’s annual gathering in October with additional private screenings.

The documentary qualified for Oscar consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the Documentary Short Film category. It is currently available for private screenings ahead of a planned public release later this year.
