Bridgeport Hospital earns national awards for critical care excellence

Bridgeport Hospital has received silver-level Beacon Awards for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) for its Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Coronary Intensive Care Unit (MICU).

The Beacon Award recognizes hospital units that improve patient outcomes and follow AACN’s Healthy Work Environment Standards. These standards include skilled communication, collaboration, decision-making, staffing, recognition, and leadership.

Anne Diamond, president of Bridgeport Hospital, stated, “This recognition reflects the exceptional care delivered by two units that consistently place patients at the center of everything they do. It underscores the commitment of our caregivers, the strength of our care environment and a unified, evidence-based approach that drives our culture, patient outcomes and nursing excellence.”

The award acknowledges effective policies and processes in the PCU and MICU. The hospital highlighted staff engagement, ongoing process improvement strategies, and performance measures meeting or exceeding benchmarks.

Anne Aquila, director of Wounds & Critical Care at Bridgeport Hospital said, “We are incredibly proud of our PCU and MICU teams for earning the AACN Beacon Award for Excellence. This recognition honors the high-quality care and unwavering dedication they demonstrate every day in providing compassionate, evidence-based care to our patients.”

Bridgeport Hospital is part of Yale New Haven Health. It operates as a non-profit with 501 beds across two campuses. The hospital serves more than 23,000 admitted patients annually and provides nearly 350,000 outpatient treatments each year. Its Connecticut Burn Center is the only one in the state.

The Beacon Award for Excellence was established in 2003 to guide improved patient outcomes and satisfaction in nursing units across the United States and Canada. Units are evaluated on leadership structures, staffing engagement, communication practices, evidence-based procedures, learning development initiatives, and outcome measurement.

AACN is recognized as the largest specialty nursing organization globally with approximately 130,000 members.
