University of Phoenix study links AI-driven skills training to lower burnout

The University of Phoenix College of Doctoral Studies has released a new white paper titled "Burnout and Autonomy in the Modern Workforce: The Role of AI-Driven Skilling in Equity and Resilience." Authored by Rheanna Reed, D.M., the report analyzes five years of data from the University of Phoenix Career Optimism Index to explore how burnout, autonomy, equity, and artificial intelligence (AI) intersect in the U.S. workforce.

The white paper incorporates peer-reviewed research on burnout, self-determination theory, the Job Demands-Resources model, and issues related to equitable access to opportunity. Reed argues that AI-driven skilling programs must be intentionally designed to address existing gaps rather than exacerbate them.

Key recommendations for employers include treating AI literacy as a fundamental skill, integrating AI into personalized employee development plans, prioritizing equity in skilling strategies, aligning training initiatives with wellness and burnout-reduction efforts, and monitoring factors such as autonomy and optimism alongside traditional financial indicators.

"Burnout and Autonomy in the Modern Workforce: The Role of AI-Driven Skilling in Equity and Resilience" offers actionable guidance for building a more resilient workforce prepared for future challenges. Reed is a research fellow at the University of Phoenix Center for Educational and Instructional Technology Research (CEITR) and has held various roles at the university since 2006. She currently serves as Faculty Quality Assurance Manager, collaborating with college leaders to maintain high instructional standards based on institutional and industry research. Reed holds a Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership from University of Phoenix and is a five-time recipient of faculty awards at the institution.
