As extreme heat affects eastern Tennessee, the American Lung Association has issued advice to help residents protect their health. The organization warns that inhaling hot, humid air can narrow airways and lead to airway inflammation, potentially causing shortness of breath.
The guidance is particularly crucial for nearly 200,000 Memphis residents with lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and lung cancer. It also applies to children and older adults. However, everyone could experience respiratory symptoms from breathing in hot, humid air.
