California will be allowing adult children to put their parents or stepparents on their health insurance coverage.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has recently signed Assembly Bill 570, known as the Parent Healthcare Act, which will make California the first state in the country to permit adult children to add their qualifying parents to their health insurance plans.
“AB 570 brings California one step closer to providing health care for all by allowing adult children to add their dependent parents to their health insurance,” Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, the author of the bill, told State of Reform. “This helps working families to save money by combining health care costs on one plan. This is also an option for mixed-status families or working families with a disabled parent at home who doesn’t qualify for other safety-net programs like Social Security or Medicare.”
The Parent Healthcare Act is for those who don't qualify for Medicare or can't afford health insurance, according to State of Reform. It will only apply to health plans on the individual market.
The bill goes into effect Saturday, Jan. 1, 2023.
