ClearCam launches new device that clears surgical vision 'to perfect the laparoscopic process'

ClearCam launched an innovative technology in March called the Kelling device, a tool that surgeons can utilize for cleaning fat, condensation, blood and other debris from the laparoscope without having to remove the device from the human body during surgery.

Allowing surgeons to maintain clear vision during surgical procedures, the Kelling device is a laparoscopic lens wiper that was approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in February 2020.

"Our dedicated process of identifying opportunities to perfect the laparoscopic process during the 100 cases has paid off to allow surgeons to use Kelling effectively and successfully, without cleaning interruptions," Dr. John Uecker, general surgeon and CEO of ClearCam, Inc., told PR Newswire. "A good surgeon is a surgeon who isn't frustrated by poor vision due to a blurred scope."

Uecker cofounded the ClearCam company after performing almost 350 laparoscopies a year with frustrations over always having to clean the lens.

There are dozens of doctors and hospitals spread throughout the U.S. that are taking advantage of this device, including Dr. Carlos Garcia-Cantu of Doctor's Hospital at Renaissance in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

"I would use this every time I had a case that required a 5-millimeter scope," Garcia-Cantu told PR Newswire. "It worked really well."

A standard abdominal laparoscopic procedure takes approximately one hour to complete, and physicians typically need to remove the scope about a dozen times to clear the lens. With the new device, that process is eliminated, which shortens the amount of time spent in the operating room.

"This device really helps when I have to work deep in the peritoneal cavity," Dr. Scott Thomas of Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in Austin, Texas, told PR Newswire.

ClearCam reduces risk and shortens the length of procedures while heightening the visualization objectives. The Kelling device has been used in several sectors, including gynecology, thoracic, pediatric and general surgery.
