Telemedicine can change the face of health care

Telemedicine has made major changes to the health care industry that will continue on after the COVID-19 pandemic, Maryland Matters reported.

“This is going to become more and more the future of health care,” Arif M. Khan, vice president of Clinical Programs and Evaluation at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, a leading insurer in Maryland the Washington, D.C., region, told the news agency.

Even though telemedicine and the technology for it has existed for years, it wasn't often used because insurance did not cover visits that weren't physically seen in person by a physician, the news agency reported.

Gov. Larry Hogan told the news agency in a statement that the state had to adapt.

“Expanding telehealth ensures that Marylanders can continue receiving essential care, and further demonstrates the great capacity and compassion of our health care providers," he said in the provided statement to Maryland Matters.

Telemedicine can be used to help providers see kids' home lives, help with mental health or help postpartum women with advice, according to the news agency
