CMS adopts engagement strategies that mirror physicians group's

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are on the same page when it comes to engaging families and other caregivers in patient care.

The CMS recently released the Person and Family Engagement Strategy to help family physicians connect with families and caregivers.

"We view this as patients and families being part of the health care team by working collaboratively with their doctor or other health care professional to be active partners when making decisions about their health,” Dr. Kate Goodrich, director of the CMS Center for Clinical Standards and Quality, said in a December 2016 blog.

There are four goals from CMS on the topic of patient and family engagement, which mirrors the steps AAFP wants to take to have better patient and family involvement and accountability.

The first goal is to create partnerships to help people get involved in making their communities healthier. The second involves promoting self-management health care based on individual or family values. The third would help patients team with their health care professionals to create individualized plans backed by evidence and crafted to align with the patient’s values. The final goal is to develop criteria and examine best practices and techniques to improve the physician experience for not only the patient but also families and caregivers.

CMS has promised to work toward these goals by incorporating engagement principles daily, monitoring success for improvement opportunities, seeking input from physicians, and strengthening engagement principles over the long haul.
