Dara Torres, an Olympic athlete, recently partnered with Celgene to increase awareness of psoriasis through the company’s Show More of You campaign in the U.S.
Torres, a mom, best-selling author and 12-time medalist at the Olympics, will share her story of psoriasis through the campaign. Her goal is to raise awareness about this disease.
The goal of the campaign is also to help people who have psoriasis learn more about their condition. The campaign encourages them to recognize and honor their accomplishments despite psoriasis.
The campaign will feature Torres as well others, showing inspirational photos. There will also be messages about how the participants show their true selves through their accomplishments.
Psoriasis -- a systemic, chronic autoimmune disease -- heightens skin cell growth. This makes the skin look raised. Some psoriasis looks like red patches that have a silvery buildup of dead skin cells.
Many psoriasis patients state that the illness causes emotional challenges in addition to the physical ones. One survey shows that approximately nine out of 10 people who have psoriasis live with embarrassment and self-consciousness about their appearance and condition. This makes it meaningful to have a campaign featuring an Olympic athlete who has shared the struggle while still making major life accomplishments.
