NIH to celebrate Rare Disease Day

Feb. 29 will mark Rare Disease Day as a day set aside by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to raise awareness about rare diseases, the people who are living with them and the advances in research and technology that are being made to combat them.

Researchers at the NIH Clinical Center are presently studying approximately 600 rare diseases. More than 30,000 patients are taking part in clinical studies and trials related to this research.

Guests are invited to attend an event, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the NIH Clinical Center, Building 10, located at 10 Center Drive, Bethesda, Maryland, where they will have the opportunity to hear presentations, view exhibits, attend an art show and take tours of the center.

Hosts include representatives from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences and the NIH Clinical Center. Also participating in the event are representatives from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, National Organization for Rare Disorders, Genetic Alliance, Global Genes, Everylife Foundation for Rare Diseases and Uplifting Athletes.

Admission is free, but registration is requested and can be completed online at http://bit.ly/1X45Z3d. The event will be streamed live at https://videocast.nih.gov.
