President Obama, Congress approve increased diabetes research funding

Officials from the American Diabetes Association have lauded the recent decisions of President Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress to approve a spending bill that will give increased funding to programs across the nation that are dedicated to the awareness, prevention and research of diabetes.

The bill will double 2016 funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) national diabetes prevention program to $20 million, which will support community diabetes prevention programs.

Discretionary funding for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for fiscal year 2016 was bumped to $1.818 billion; in 2015, the funding was $68 million. Additionally, $170.129 million in funding was earmarked for the Division of Diabetes Translation at the CDC -- an increase of $30 million.

"The American Diabetes Association thanks Congress and the president for making diabetes a priority," an ADA spokesperson said. "We look forward to seeing the progress that is made next year in the fight to stop diabetes."
