Ohio State Health and Discovery highlighted the story of Tim Billingsley and Leon Chou on April 14 as part of its celebration of organ transplants through the 'Buckeyes for Life' initiative.

Billingsley and Chou were not close friends, having only met occasionally because their children attended preschool together in Pickerington, Ohio. "I could probably count on one hand how many times I actually had a conversation with Tim," Chou said. When Chou was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia at age 32 in 2012, followed by polycystic kidney disease during his treatment at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), Billingsley stepped forward to help when Chou needed a kidney transplant after his cancer went into remission but his kidney disease worsened by summer 2025.
