Communities across the country will participate in National Take Down Tobacco Day on April 1, a youth-led event focused on the tobacco industry's targeting of young people through flavored e-cigarettes and new "smart vape" devices.
The day aims to highlight ongoing concerns about youth nicotine addiction, as well as the tactics used by companies to appeal to teenagers. According to the 2024 New York Youth Tobacco Survey, 17% of New York State high school students use some form of tobacco product, with e-cigarettes being the most common among youth.
“Youth addiction to nicotine is no accident,” said Katie Farrelly, Reality Check Coordinator at POW'R Against Tobacco. “Youth-friendly flavors that mimic candy and desserts, and now devices with built-in games and screens, are designed to hook young people early and keep them using.”
Emerging products known as “smart vapes” incorporate digital entertainment features such as touch screens and games that only activate during use. These devices are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but remain widely available despite being sold illegally in the United States. Meghan DuBois O’Connor, MPA, Director at American Lung Association said: “It’s well documented that nicotine harms the developing adolescent brain. In addition to addiction, e-cigarette aerosol exposes users to toxic chemicals and heavy metals, with long-term consequences we are still uncovering.”
POW’R Against Tobacco will partner with the Port Jervis Youth Coalition for a training session on April 8 addressing how deceptive marketing targets youth through flavored products and smart vapes. Participants will also create tie-dyed t-shirts representing different vape flavors as part of their advocacy efforts in schools.
