Plastic Ingenuity expands Thermoform Healthcare Packaging into Europe

Plastic Ingenuity announced on Mar. 9 the expansion of its operations into Europe through the acquisition of Spezi-Pack, a thermoforming company based near Dresden, Germany. The move allows Plastic Ingenuity to provide regional manufacturing for medical device and pharmaceutical packaging in Europe.

The expansion is significant as it aims to improve supply chain resilience and support localized production for global healthcare customers. By establishing a presence in both North America and Europe, the company seeks to increase efficiencies along the value chain.

“With manufacturing now available in both North America and Europe, Plastic Ingenuity is better positioned to support localised production, improve supply chain resilience, and meet the evolving needs of global healthcare customers,” said Dan Kuehn, President and CEO of Plastic Ingenuity.

Spezi-Pack brings nearly four decades of experience in thermoforming. Dirk Walters, former president of Spezi-Pack, will continue overseeing operations in Germany without interruption. “A strong, tenured team is already in place, and they are excited about the growth opportunities our new ownership will provide to them,” Kuehn said.

Plastic Ingenuity plans significant investments at the German facility. Planned enhancements include an ISO Class 7 cleanroom and new thermoforming lines aimed at expanding capacity for medical and pharmaceutical packaging. These upgrades are expected to be fully operational by the first quarter of 2027.
