Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) has been named one of the World’s Best Hospitals for 2026 by Newsweek, ranking 173rd globally. The recognition is based on international assessments of quality measures, patient satisfaction, and recommendations from medical professionals.
Katherine Heilpern, MD, president of YNHH, stated: “Our ranking among the world’s best hospitals is an affirmation of the exceptional dedication our teams bring to patients every day. This recognition reflects not only our clinical excellence but our relentless commitment to safety, innovation, and the patient experience.”
In addition to its global ranking by Newsweek and Statista, YNHH has achieved several notable distinctions this year. The hospital received its fourth consecutive Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), which is regarded as a leading honor for nursing excellence in the United States. Its Heart and Vascular Center was ranked among the top five nationally by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation for Structural Heart and Interventional Cardiology programs.
The hospital also earned The Infection Prevention Award for exceeding national standards in infection control according to CDC data and Leapfrog hand hygiene criteria. YNHH received the 2026 STAND Award to strengthen its capacity for treating high-consequence infectious diseases. Additionally, two units were honored with Beacon Awards of Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), recognizing outstanding patient outcomes and teamwork.
Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 list evaluated more than 2,500 hospitals worldwide. The rankings emphasized hospital quality metrics, expanded accreditation data across countries, patient-experience information, and included greater weighting for Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs).
YNHH is a not-for-profit hospital with 1,541 beds that serves as the primary teaching facility for Yale School of Medicine. Founded in 1826 as one of America’s earliest voluntary hospitals, it operates two campuses in New Haven along with Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, and Smilow Cancer Hospital.
