New award honors late advocate Trevor Summerfield's impact on lung cancer awareness

The New York State Cancer Consortium’s Lung Cancer Screening Action Team, in collaboration with the American Lung Association in New York, has established the Trevor Summerfield Lung Cancer Advocacy Award. The award was created to honor the memory of Trevor Jon Summerfield, a former Director of Advocacy for New York and Vermont at the American Lung Association.

Trevor Summerfield was born in Amsterdam, New York, and raised in Canajoharie. He graduated from Canajoharie High School and The College of Saint Rose. His career included roles at the National Veterans Business Development Council and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention before joining the American Lung Association. During his tenure with the organization, he focused on improving lung health, increasing access to screening and treatment, and supporting those affected by lung disease.

Summerfield played an important role as a partner to the New York State Cancer Consortium’s Lung Cancer Screening Action Team. He contributed to legislative efforts and worked to empower advocates throughout New York.

The inaugural award was presented posthumously to Summerfield on February 9, 2026. His parents, Lesley and William Summerfield, accepted the award at their home in Canajoharie.

“Trevor’s work touched countless lives—from Albany to his hometown of Canajoharie and far beyond,” said Michael Seilback, AVP, Nationwide Advocacy, State Public Policy for the American Lung Association. “He was not only a passionate and effective advocate, but also a great teammate, a loyal friend, and a truly remarkable person. We’re proud to carry his legacy forward through this award and the continued work he cared so deeply about.”

Summerfield died on August 30, 2024 at age 40.
