CoolSculpting offers non-surgical option for targeted fat reduction at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center

CoolSculpting, also known as cryolipolysis, is a non-surgical procedure that targets localized fat deposits by using extreme cold to freeze fat cells. This process causes the fat cells to break down and be eliminated by the body. The treatment is not designed for weight loss but for reducing stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.

During a CoolSculpting session, vacuum adapters are placed on the targeted area for 35 to 75 minutes. Two sessions spaced four to six weeks apart are generally recommended, with results typically visible within three months after the second session.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. "The most reported symptom during this treatment is a cold sensation. Some patients report a pulling or tugging sensation when the adapters are put in place, but that quickly resolves." After treatment, temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, tingling, aching or cramping may occur.

A rare side effect called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia can cause an overgrowth of fatty tissue in the treated area eight to 24 weeks after the procedure. In such cases, liposuction may be considered as a follow-up treatment.

CoolSculpting can treat small areas with pinchable fat such as under the chin or buttocks, upper arms, abdomen, flanks, back and thighs. At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, advanced practice providers perform CoolSculpting on pre-screened patients.

Ideal candidates for CoolSculpting are in good health and have isolated pockets of fat resistant to other methods. Individuals with certain autoimmune conditions, skin disorders, chronic pain issues or specific blood disorders should avoid this procedure. It is also not suitable for those seeking reduction of large amounts of fat tissue.

To determine eligibility for CoolSculpting, individuals are encouraged to consult with body contouring specialists at medical centers like Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center.
