Cousin Surgery introduces new cervical prosthesis aimed at preserving patient mobility

Cousin Surgery, a company specializing in implantable medical devices, has expanded its spinal surgery product line with the acquisition of C Disc. This cervical prosthesis is described as the first reverse model featuring a double center of rotation. According to the company, this design aims to help surgeons preserve and control mobility in patients undergoing cervical spine procedures.

The C Disc is intended as an alternative to traditional spinal fusion techniques and addresses a variety of surgical needs related to disc degeneration and cervical spine instability. It can be used for conditions such as disc herniation, disc protrusion with canal stenosis, and mild to moderate spondylarthrosis.

The device was developed by Dr. Jean-Philippe Lemaire, an orthopedic surgeon known for his work on disc prostheses, and Professor François Lavaste, a biomechanics specialist at Arts et Métiers Paris Tech. Their collaboration incorporated clinical experience from the George Charpak Institute of Human Biomechanics.

The C Disc uses a ball-and-socket mechanism with a mobile core made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which allows adaptation to various physiological movements including flexion/extension, lateral bending, rotation, and translation. The implant’s double center of rotation is designed for self-centering and limits excessive movement.

For implantation safety, the prosthesis comes pre-assembled with a single-use placement instrument that enables optimal grip and repositioning without disconnecting the device.

Manufactured entirely in France, C Disc joins Cousin Surgery’s other products focused on preserving spinal mobility rather than restricting it through fusion. These include Intraspine—a device supporting lumbar biomechanics—and Bdyn—an implant for dynamic stabilization in cases of spinal degeneration or instability.

Currently available in France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, Cousin Surgery plans further international distribution targeting Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan, and Mexico.

François Henin, CEO of Cousin Surgery said: "Our commitment remains to provide surgeons with the most relevant solutions to maintain their patients' mobility. With C Disc, we are enhancing our spinal expertise by introducing an innovative option in the cervical segment."

The C Disc is classified as a Class II b medical device under MDD certification standards. It is distributed exclusively by Cousin Biotech while Ceraver serves as its legal manufacturer. CE conformity has been verified by GMED (0459) according to Directive 93/42/EEC.
