Baylor College of Medicine hosts event reflecting on Hurricane Katrina's legacy

Baylor College of Medicine’s Office of Community Engagement and Humanities Expression and Arts Lab (HEAL) will hold an event titled “An Evening of Memory, Medicine and the Arts: Stories from Katrina” at the El Dorado Ballroom in Houston on December 15. The event marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which led to more than 100,000 people relocating from New Orleans to Houston and had a lasting impact on both cities’ cultural and medical communities.

The gathering aims to bring together health professionals, artists, and community members to discuss how public health, trust, and storytelling intersect. Attendees will engage in dialogue and watch performances that explore how shared memories shape disaster response efforts and influence public health policy.

A panel discussion is scheduled as part of the evening’s program. Topics will include building trust in public health systems, ethical considerations in storytelling, and the importance of arts in preserving collective memory. The event also offers continuing medical education credits for participants.

“An Evening of Memory, Medicine and the Arts: Stories from Katrina” is open for RSVP.
