As Wisconsin faces a period of extreme heat, the American Lung Association has released advice aimed at helping residents protect their respiratory health. According to the organization, about 921,000 people in Wisconsin live with lung disease, making them particularly vulnerable during hot and humid weather.
"Extreme weather conditions, like the current heat wave, can be especially challenging for the 921,000 people living with lung disease in Wisconsin. Inhaling hot, humid air can cause airway inflammation and exacerbate respiratory disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It can also be a trigger for people with asthma because breathing in hot, humid air induces airway constriction," the American Lung Association stated.
The group has outlined six recommendations for safeguarding lung health during these conditions. The tips are designed to help both those with existing respiratory illnesses and the general public manage risks associated with high temperatures and humidity.
