Stroke survivors find hope with support from UTHealth Houston

Sergeant Danny L. Beckworth and former attorney Frank Bennett “Ben” Harvie Jr., both stroke survivors, have achieved remarkable physical feats with the help of UTHealth Houston and UT Physicians neurologist Anjail Sharrief, MD. Beckworth completed a two-day cycling event and a half marathon before taking up jujitsu at age 55, while Harvie set an age record at the Houston Marathon at age 75.

Dr. Sharrief describes them as examples of "resilience and fitness." She stated, "For these two stroke survivors, there is a persistent resolve to improve and recover and resume regular life." According to the American Heart Association, nearly one in four stroke survivors will experience another stroke. The association recommends "Life’s Essential 8" for reducing stroke risk.

Beckworth experienced his first stroke in 2014 without warning but managed to return to full duty after recovery. He credits his faith, colleagues, and determination for his recovery. He continues to work out regularly despite having overcome prostate cancer since his stroke.

Harvie survived a heart attack in 1989 before facing another health challenge in 2012 when he had a stroke due to an aneurysm. Under Dr. Sharrief's guidance, he has continued long-distance running and recently broke records for his age group.

Both men offer advice for other stroke survivors. Beckworth encourages others by saying, "Believe in your strength... You can overcome." Harvie emphasizes the importance of having a supportive doctor like Dr. Sharrief: "There is life after stroke."
