As extreme heat impacts the Nashville area, the American Lung Association has issued advice to help residents protect their health. Breathing in hot, humid air can lead to narrowed airways and airway inflammation, potentially causing shortness of breath.
This guidance is particularly crucial for nearly 300,000 Nashville residents with lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and lung cancer. Children and older adults are also at risk. However, anyone can experience respiratory symptoms from inhaling hot, humid air.
