American Lung Association hosts backpack drive for students on August 2

The American Lung Association is organizing its 3rd annual "Backpacks for Bright Futures" event on Saturday, August 2. This year, the event will take place at James Simons Montessori School in Charleston, South Carolina. The association plans to distribute 750 backpacks filled with school supplies and vape-free resources to students of all grade levels.

Medical professionals will be present to address questions related to lung health, including tobacco use, secondhand smoke, and asthma. Resources specifically for students with asthma and their families will also be available. Attendees can connect with community partners offering various free and low-cost services such as youth financial literacy programs, local food programs, mental health services, and personal hygiene services like dental care and haircuts.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., operating on a first-come, first-served basis. According to the American Lung Association, this initiative aims to educate students about lung health and the dangers of youth vaping while helping alleviate financial burdens associated with back-to-school expenses.
