ENT specialist on acid reflux: ‘You actually have a structural issue that may predispose you to sinusitis’

Pierre Dazé, a Physician Assistant at Frederick Breathe Free, said that structural issues can predispose individuals to sinusitis and that post-nasal drip resulting from reflux may increase the risk of both acute and chronic sinusitis. This statement was made in an Instagram post.

"One of the ways your body might try to combat reflux is by creating more post-nasal drip, and with that increased mucous production, if you don't realize that you actually have a structural issue that may predispose you to sinusitis, then that will help develop a first acute and then chronic sinusitis," said Pierre Daze, Physician Assistant (PA-C), according to Instagram.

According to the National Library of Medicine, research suggests there is a possible relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic sinusitis. Studies have found that patients with chronic sinusitis often also have GERD, and managing acid reflux may improve sinus symptoms in some individuals.

Chronic sinusitis affects 28.9 million American adults, or 11% of the adult population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Balloon sinuplasty is most often recommended for people with chronic sinusitis after other treatments for their condition have been ineffective. The procedure is fairly straightforward, and reported complications are minimal. There’s no cutting and no removal of bones or tissue.

Dazé has a background in otolaryngology and is a graduate of The George Washington University’s physician assistant program.
