As a large Saharan dust cloud approaches the Southeast, the American Lung Association has issued advice to help residents protect their health. Inhaled particles can lead to or exacerbate coughing, wheezing, lower respiratory tract infections, lung diseases, and cardiovascular issues.
This guidance is particularly crucial for nearly 400,000 Mississippians with lung conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. Children and older adults are also at risk. However, anyone may experience respiratory symptoms due to dust exposure.
