Mental health impacts explored in latest issue of Annals

The May issue of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, published by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), examines the psychological impact of chronic conditions such as asthma and allergies. According to Mitchell Grayson, MD, editor in chief of Annals, these conditions can significantly affect mental health: "The diseases we treat in allergy/immunology are primarily chronic illnesses and they often have a psychological impact on those who suffer from them." He emphasizes that fear and anxiety are common components of allergic diseases.

The journal features several articles addressing these issues. One article titled "Depression and Anxiety in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis: Recognizing and Addressing Mental Health Burden" discusses how atopic dermatitis (AD) affects patients psychologically. It suggests that healthcare professionals should encourage discussions about mental health with AD patients and screen for depression and anxiety.

Another article focuses on managing childhood asthma by considering environmental, social, and behavioral factors. It highlights the need to address non-pharmacologic aspects of asthma management to reduce health disparities.

A third piece explores strategies for alleviating food allergy-related anxiety through proximity challenges. This method involves exposing patients to their feared allergens in a controlled manner to reduce anxiety levels.

Dr. Grayson comments on the value of theme issues: “Theme issues allow Annals the opportunity to highlight a specific issue, disease, or concept in a way where the reader gets a more concentrated exposure.”
