American Lung Association highlights efforts during Turquoise Takeover week

The American Lung Association is turning the nation turquoise from May 5 to 11, 2025, as part of LUNG FORCE’s Turquoise Takeover and Lung Cancer Action Week. This annual event aims to raise awareness about lung cancer, honor those affected, and inspire action for life-saving measures.

LUNG FORCE continues its mission through education, advocacy, and research to reduce lung cancer diagnoses and improve outcomes. Since its inception in 2014, LUNG FORCE has raised over $32 million for lung cancer research, increasing its commitment by more than 140%.

“We are making incredible strides in lung cancer awareness and research, but there is still much work to do,” said Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association. “Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., with someone diagnosed every two minutes. Yet, thanks to advancements in early detection and treatment, the five-year survival rate has improved by 44% over the past decade and more than 65 new therapies have been approved since 2016. Turquoise Takeover is a powerful reminder that we must continue to stand together, support those impacted and push for even greater progress.”

The Turquoise Takeover celebration unites communities nationwide against lung cancer. Each year, buildings and landmarks across the U.S. light up turquoise—the signature color of LUNG FORCE—to show support on social media and amplify voices affected by lung cancer. The movement aims to raise awareness and fund critical research toward saving lives.

The American Lung Association encourages participation in Turquoise Takeover and Lung Cancer Action Week. Early detection saves lives; thus, their Saved By The Scan campaign helps people assess their risk for lung cancer at SavedByTheScan.org. Since 2017, over 1.4 million individuals have determined if they are at high risk through this initiative.
