UTHealth Houston has launched a new research initiative called the Institute of Perioperative Medicine. This institute aims to enhance surgical outcomes and reduce perioperative complications. The initiative involves collaboration across various schools, including McGovern Medical School and the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, both part of UTHealth Houston.
The focus of the institute is addressing perioperative organ injuries, with Kevin Morano, PhD, stating, "The Institute of Perioperative Medicine brings together world-class experts in multiple disciplines to tackle the biggest questions in post-surgical complications." The initiative will use laboratory research, artificial intelligence, and clinical trials to develop new treatments and prevention methods.
The leadership is composed of notable figures like Cynthia Ju, PhD, and Holger Eltzschig, MD, PhD, who aim to make surgery safer through research. Eltzschig commented, "Our goal is to make surgery safer and improve patient recovery through groundbreaking research and innovative interventions."
With five specialized research centers, UTHealth Houston plans to seek an increase in research funding and publish new findings. Cynthia Ju highlighted the initiative's impact: "By integrating research with clinical practice, we hope to significantly reduce surgical risks and improve patient outcomes worldwide."
