A Minnesota researcher has received a grant from the American Lung Association Research Institute to advance his study on new treatments for lung disease. Nicholas Goplen, PhD at the Mayo Clinic, was awarded the Emerging Respiratory Pathogen Award.
The importance of lung research in Minnesota is underscored by the fact that over 770,000 residents are affected by lung disease. The Lung Association expressed its honor in welcoming Dr. Goplen to their team of researchers.
Dr. Goplen's project investigates abnormal immune regulation in post-viral pulmonary fibrosis. He aims to understand how CD8+T cell functions, which are necessary for sterilizing the lungs, interfere with cells involved in lung regeneration. His research could lead to more effective treatments for emerging respiratory pathogens, particularly those associated with "long COVID" symptoms.
In the past year, the American Lung Association Research Institute announced a total research investment of $22 million, positioning it as one of the largest programs dedicated to lung health in the United States. The organization funded 139 research grants and strategic partnerships aimed at identifying, treating, and curing lung diseases.
This year marks 120 years since the American Lung Association began funding lifesaving research. Their researchers have made significant contributions such as combating tuberculosis and aiding premature babies with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), alongside supporting COVID-19 research.
Awards were distributed across various categories addressing different aspects of lung disease including allergic respiratory diseases, respiratory health equity, interstitial lung disease innovation, and lung cancer discovery among others.
Research projects funded by the Lung Association undergo rigorous scientific peer review ensuring they address complex issues related to lung health effectively.
The Lung Association is currently accepting applications for its 2025-2026 research awards and grants cycle. More information about active funding opportunities can be found at Lung.org/awards.
