Health care could be at the forefront of Democrat Stacey Abrams’ campaign in her second bid for governor.
Known for her fight for Medicaid expansion, many expect Abrams' 2022 Georgia gubernatorial campaign to include health care as one of the major issues she will be tackling.
"[Abrams] campaigned heavily on Medicaid expansion in 2018 and she’ll do so again,” Brian Robinson, a Republican strategist, told The Current. “It’s an issue that unites all Democrats and independents and poaches some Republicans. Polling shows a majority of Georgians support it, and that’s the kind of topic a nominee is looking for in a general election to contrast with the opponent.”
Abrams has been pushing for Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act since the last governor's race in 2018, which she narrowly lost to current Gov. Brian Kemp (R).
Health insurance expert and former Georgia State University professor Bill Custer pointed out that any Democrat running for governor would promote health care issues. He told The Current that Medicaid expansion “is clearly an issue important to Georgians.”
Georgia is one of 12 states that have not expanded Medicaid. The others are: Alabama, Florida, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.
