Health is Primary campaign seeks to make patients advocates for their care

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), in partnership with seven other national family medicine organizations, is continuing its mini-campaigns to educate patients on the importance of primary care and how to be a good patient through the Health is Primary campaign.

The goal is to have patients who are active in their health and educated about subjects including end-of-life care options, mental health, fitness and nutrition, chronic disease, childhood and adult immunizations, healthy aging, caregiver health, and patient engagement.

The campaign, which started in 2016, provides important handouts designed by physicians who believe it is essential that patients understand their options when it comes to their specific health care needs. All of the information designed by these family medicine organizations can be found on the Health is Primary website (healthisprimary.org) in English and Spanish.

There are also sections on the website detailing what patients, physicians, students, employers, and state and local health care chapters can do to make every visit to a doctor a patient-centric visit in order to get the most out of each visit.
