American Academy of Ophthalmology praises Price’s HHS nomination

The world’s largest consortium of eye physicians and surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, recently lauded president-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), calling Rep. Tom Price an outstanding candidate.

"Rep. Tom Price, M.D., one of the nation's most ardent champions of quality patient care, is an excellent choice to serve as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,” Dr. David Parke II, CEO at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, said. “We can think of no better voice to lead our nation's critical health care programs, including Medicare, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health.”

Noting that the academy has worked closely with Price since his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2005, the spokesman praised the congressman for his creativity and thoughtfulness.

“(He is) committed to the idea that quality patient care must govern all policies that impact our nation's health care system,” Parke said. “Rep. Price is a trusted individual who works tirelessly to ensure that the federal government supports, rather than hinders, physicians' abilities to ensure best outcomes.”

With headquarters located in San Francisco, California, the American Academy of Ophthalmology also maintains a Washington, D.C., office for its governmental affairs division.

With a worldwide membership of 32,000, the academy strives to “protect sight and empower lives” through promoting quality ophthalmic education and patient advocacy.
