Dr. Otis Webb Brawley, the current chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, Georgia, was elected earlier this week to serve with the 2015 Class of the National Academy of Medicine.
This is one of the top honors in American medicine. Brawley was elected for his expertise and contributions in the areas of cancer control and prevention.
The academy, formerly known as the Institute of Medicine, serves as adviser to the nation and the international community on issues relating to biomedical science, medicine and health.
"This election is a true honor for Otis, but such recognition comes as no surprise to those of us at the American Cancer Society who know him well,” Gary Reedy, the society’s CEO, said.
The academy is part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, which includes the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Engineering.
Earlier this year, Brawley was named a Master of the American College of Physicians — one of less than 1,300 to be so named in the history of the college, which reaches back more than a century.
