Patient Organizations Applaud Release of Affordable Care Act Rule to Protect All Patients from Discrimination When Accessing Health Care

Patient groups have expressed their appreciation for the release of the final rule on Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which aims to enhance non-discrimination protections in healthcare. In a joint statement issued by 32 organizations representing millions of patients and consumers, the Department of Health and Human Services was commended for taking a significant step in safeguarding patients from discrimination.

The organizations highlighted that the new rule reinforces protections for individuals irrespective of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability in covered health programs and activities, aligning with legal intent and precedent. Emphasizing the importance of equitable access to healthcare, they underscored the impact of discrimination on individuals with serious and chronic conditions, who may face barriers to seeking necessary medical care if concerns about discrimination persist.

The statement emphasized that ensuring non-discriminatory practices in healthcare is essential for promoting better health outcomes and reducing costs for both patients and the healthcare system. The organizations voiced their support for the new rule as a crucial advancement towards achieving health equity for all individuals.
