Diane Jackson, 79, was recently diagnosed with a neurocognitive disorder at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Neuropsychology Clinic, according to an Aug. 7 article. Jackson said her memory loss began gradually before worsening significantly: “It was such a gradual thing,” she says about her memory loss, “and then all of a sudden, it was just like stepping off a cliff.”
Jackson’s diagnosis comes after experiencing problems with memory and thinking that exceed what is typical for her age. She still requires further testing to determine the underlying cause of her symptoms. Jackson retired about 15 years ago from the U.S. Department of Defense and has a family history of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. “I’ve been hoping I don’t get it,” she says.
The Neuropsychology Clinic at Ohio State tests individuals over 18 who are experiencing changes in memory or cognition that concern them or their families. Christopher Nguyen, PhD, ABPP, serves as director of the Neurobehavior Program and the Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
The clinic evaluates patients who may have experienced strokes, traumatic brain injuries or concussions. It also assesses those with conditions such as schizophrenia that can affect memory and attention. Retired athletes facing issues related to mood or cognitive function can be tested for links to repeated head injuries.
In addition to diagnostic services, neuropsychologists at the clinic are researching technological tools like smart pillboxes to help patients manage medications effectively. Another ongoing study examines how thinking skills, technology use habits and social connections might make some individuals more susceptible to misinformation online.
