A study published in the Journal of Political Economy provides causal evidence that improving sleep can directly enhance academic performance, according to an Aug. 4 report. The research involved more than 1,100 university students in the United States and tested whether small monetary incentives could help students build better sleep habits and if those habits would translate into higher grades.
At baseline, students averaged 6.6 hours of sleep per night, with only 43% meeting the recommended minimum of seven hours on weeknights. More than 85% failed to get seven hours of sleep on at least one school night each week. About half went to bed after 1:00 a.m., and one in four after 2:00 a.m.
Researchers Osea Giuntella (University of Pittsburgh), Silvia Saccardo (Carnegie Mellon University), and Sally Sadoff (University of California San Diego) combined objective sleep tracking using Fitbits with a custom-built smartphone app that delivered bedtime reminders, real-time feedback, and immediate digital payments for meeting sleep goals. The app allowed researchers to monitor engagement and test how different combinations of cues, feedback, and incentives affected both short-term sleep improvements and longer-term habits.
Participants were randomly assigned to receive personalized bedtime reminders, morning feedback, and small cash rewards—about $4.75 per night—for achieving at least seven hours of verified sleep using Fitbit trackers. The intervention increased the share of nights with seven or more hours by 26%, or about 19 additional minutes per weeknight; smaller but lasting gains persisted even after incentives ended.
Students who received incentives earned grade points between 0.075–0.089 higher that semester—a standard deviation improvement equivalent to roughly doubling the impact of traditional financial-aid incentive programs but at less than one-quarter the cost. Giuntella said, “This was one of the most comprehensive behavioral field experiments ever conducted on sleep... By integrating wearable technology, real-time incentives, and psychological measures, we were able to observe both the formation of sleep habits and their educational impact.”
The effects were most pronounced among freshmen—students newly responsible for managing their own schedules—and strongest in STEM courses as well as midday classes where cognitive demands are highest. While physical activity levels did not change significantly, nor did end-of-semester mental health scores overall, participants reported feeling better able to cope with stress during treatment periods—a result consistent with improved quality and regularity of sleep.
