Robotic knee replacement enables Ohio State physician to return to patient care

An Ohio State physician found relief from years of pain and limping through a robotic knee replacement performed by orthopedic surgeons at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, according to a July 28 announcement. The procedure utilized CT-guided robotic approaches that help preserve tissue and create better alignment.

Benita Petri-Pickstone, MD, a family physician and clinical associate professor in Family Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, had experienced uneven joint wear over time, which eventually led to severe osteoarthritis. An X-ray revealed her femur and tibia were bone-on-bone without any cushion. "I couldn’t do anything. I was just in constant pain all the time. I couldn’t sleep. Nothing was making me comfortable. I just couldn’t get pain relief," Petri-Pickstone said.

She relied on a cane while continuing to see her patients until the pain became too great, prompting her to consult Jeffrey Reeves, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in robotic-assisted joint replacement at the same medical center. Reeves determined she was an ideal candidate for robotic knee replacement surgery due to her history of previous knee surgery and complex anatomical issues.

After undergoing the procedure, Petri-Pickstone was able to return to caring for her own patients at Ohio State.
