Global database launched to monitor microbial health risks in coastal waters

A new global database has been launched to centralize information on disease-causing microorganisms, antibiotic resistance genes, and virulence factors found in coastal waters, providing researchers and public health professionals with a practical tool for assessing biological risks in estuaries and other nearshore environments, according to a Jul. 24 announcement.

"Coastal waters connect human communities, wildlife, wastewater systems, and marine ecosystems, but information about their microbial hazards has often been scattered across separate studies," said Lu Fan of the Southern University of Science and Technology. "The Coastal Water Pathogen Database was developed to make these complex data easier to explore, compare, and use for environmental and public health decision-making."

The Coastal Water Pathogen Database (CWPD) is an open-access platform that integrates shotgun metagenomic sequencing data from various coastal environments. Unlike existing databases focused mainly on individual bacterial species or aquaculture pathogens, CWPD includes pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi, as well as antibiotic resistance genes and virulence factors. The current version compiles data from 158 samples collected between 2010 and 2019 across six regions: Pearl River Estuary, Cochin Estuary, Columbia River Estuary, Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, and the Baltic Sea.

Researchers detected 361 pathogenic bacterial species, 42 pathogenic viral species, 287 antibiotic resistance gene subtypes from 30 classes, and 10 virulence factors among these samples. The knowledge dictionary behind the platform encompasses even more entries: 1,904 pathogen types; 2,373 antibiotic resistance genes; and 541 virulence factors. CWPD offers interactive maps as well as visual tools such as word clouds and heat maps for users to explore geographic distribution or search by location or risk category without handling raw sequencing datasets directly.

CWPD also features an online analysis service where registered users can upload new metagenomic data files for automated quality control and annotation processes—typically delivering results within about twelve hours for a standard sample size. The system’s modular architecture is designed so it can be linked with ecological or clinical databases in future updates while supporting the One Health approach that connects human health with animal welfare and environmental conditions.

The authors noted that this initial version does not provide full global coverage since most available samples are concentrated in several well-studied regions. They plan biannual updates aimed at expanding coverage into densely populated deltas as well as underrepresented areas such as Africa and South America.
