A 24-year analysis from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study suggests that the context in which people sit may influence brain measures related to vascular health and dementia risk, according to a July 22 report.
The study, published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, found that television watching and occupational sitting were associated with different structural brain measures. Researchers observed that sedentary behavior is generally linked to poor health outcomes, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The research focused on how specific types of sedentary behavior affect regions of the brain early impacted by neurodegeneration.
Participants reported their frequency of television watching and occupational sitting over a 12-month period at the initial study visit between 1987 and 1989. Brain structure was assessed using magnetic resonance imaging approximately 24 years later. The results showed that frequent television watching was associated with greater white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume—a marker for small vessel disease—and smaller volumes in certain cortical regions linked to dementia risk. In contrast, those who always sat during work had lower WMH volume and higher cortical volumes in some areas, though these effects varied by hemisphere and sex.
The authors said, “the context-dependent association between SB [sedentary behavior] and brain structure is at least partially independent of PA [physical activity] and other behavioral and cardiometabolic risk factors.” They also noted significant sex-specific differences: very frequent television viewing did not correlate with any particular brain region in women, but was linked to lower regional volumes among men.
Limitations included reliance on self-reported data rather than objective measurements, potential recall bias, inability to measure exact durations of sedentary behaviors, observational design precluding causal inference, and lack of repeated SB assessment over time. Despite these limitations, analyses modeling time-varying exposures produced similar results.
The authors concluded: “SB is linked with brain structure and WMH volumes, but its effects vary by behavioral context, for example, television watching versus occupational sitting, and sex.” They suggested future studies should consider context-specific differences when designing interventions targeting sedentary behavior.
