Novartis and Johnson & Johnson begin Q2 earnings as biopharma IPOs continue

Novartis followed Johnson & Johnson in beginning the biopharma sector’s second quarter earnings, announcing on July 22 that it will maintain its merger and acquisition strategy focused on bolt-on deals. Other major companies including Roche, AstraZeneca, GSK, and Biogen are set to release their Q2 earnings reports in the coming days.

Eli Lilly’s recent acquisition of AtaiBeckley for up to $3.8 million was highlighted by analysts as a significant development for the psychedelic therapeutics field. H.C. Wainwright wrote in a note to investors that the deal “is the clearest strategic validation to date of psychedelics and interventional psychiatry as an emerging pharmaceutical category.”

In regulatory news, there is ongoing debate regarding the Food and Drug Administration’s policy of releasing complete response letters in real-time. Earlier this month, the FDA announced a pause on this initiative after a citizen petition questioned its legality. Despite this announcement, the agency subsequently uploaded another group of complete response letters to its online portal.

The pace of initial public offerings in biopharma remains strong, with 18 new companies going public during the first half of 2026. Several additional biotech firms have announced plans for IPOs recently, while Axiom Biosciences is seeking capital through an offering in Hong Kong.
