MedScan 3D founder discusses 3D tissue models after Med-Tech Expo competition win

Jacqui O’Connor, founder and CEO of MedScan 3D, discussed her company’s approach to transforming two-dimensional medical scans into tactile three-dimensional models in an interview published on July 21. O’Connor recently won the Med-Tech Expo 2026 PITCH competition.

O’Connor described her journey from working as a surgical representative to developing turnkey anatomical modelling solutions for major medical device companies and clinicians worldwide. She said the process involves converting complex flat scans into accurate models that surgeons can physically handle.

According to O’Connor, one key innovation is the use of highly specialised silicone instead of rigid plastics, which allows the models to replicate the exact tactile feel of human tissue. She said precise image segmentation is considered the “magic” phase in their pipeline because it ensures accuracy in creating these physical representations.

O’Connor also highlighted that keeping manufacturing entirely in-house enables MedScan 3D to move faster than competitors who rely on overseas production. This approach, she said, helps them deliver solutions more efficiently and with greater control over quality.

The interview provides insight into how advancements in materials and imaging are changing pre-surgical planning for clinicians.
