Chris Whitehouse, a political consultant and expert on medical technology policy and regulation at Whitehouse Communications, reports that Lord Patrick Vallance has resigned from his post as Science Minister ahead of the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle, according to a July 20 announcement.
Vallance served as the Chief Scientific Adviser from 2018 to 2023. He was made a Member of the House of Lords by Sir Keir Starmer in July 2024 and was appointed to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology following Labour’s election victory in 2024.
In his resignation statement, Vallance said, “After nearly a decade in Government I am stepping down as a minister, for personal reasons. It has been a privilege to serve as the chief scientific adviser and, more recently, science minister and minister for nuclear.”
He added, “I wish Andy Burnham and the new team in No 10 well and I will continue to advise and help them in a non-ministerial capacity.”
Vallance has also resigned from another related role he held at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
