Researchers announced on Jul. 17 that frequent television watching in midlife may be linked to long-term negative effects on brain health. A study published in Alzheimer's and Dementia: Journal of the Alzheimer's Association found that individuals who reported watching TV "very often" during their middle years later exhibited reduced volume in areas of the brain associated with memory, as well as smaller frontal and occipital lobes. The study also identified damage in the brain's white matter related to aging, stroke risk, cognitive decline, and dementia.
The research analyzed data from approximately 1,700 adults with an average age of 53 who participated in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study between 1987 and 1989. Participants were asked about their frequency of television viewing during leisure time and how much time they spent sitting at work. More than twenty years later, these participants underwent brain MRI scans.
Compared to those who "never" or "seldom" watched TV, individuals reporting "very often" showed widespread structural differences across their brains. These included smaller volumes in regions associated with early signs of Alzheimer's disease and increased white matter hyperintensity volumes—an indicator of cerebral small blood vessel disease linked to cognitive decline and dementia. The findings persisted even after controlling for factors such as physical activity level, diabetes status, body mass index, smoking habits, and alcohol use.
The researchers noted that not all sedentary activities had similar associations; other types of sitting did not show the same relationship with negative changes in brain structure. In fact, those who sat for long periods at work actually had larger frontal and occipital lobes along with reduced white matter hyperintensity volumes compared to frequent TV watchers—a difference attributed by study authors to potentially greater intellectual stimulation during occupational sitting.
Men appeared particularly vulnerable; most changes related to both TV watching and occupational sitting were observed among male participants when MRI results were separated by sex. The study relied on self-reported data for television consumption rather than timed tracking devices; participants also did not have baseline MRIs before the start of the observation period.
“We frequently encourage the public not to spend too much time sitting down, but experts may want to expand that recommendation to encompass the activities done while sitting, since those seem to have distinct impacts on brain health,” said Natan Feter, postdoctoral scholar at USC Dornsife.
