NIH awards $3.7 million grant for AI research in glaucoma prognosis

The National Eye Institute and National Institutes of Health awarded Mingquan Lin, PhD, an assistant professor in the Division of Computational Health Sciences at the University of Minnesota Medical School, a five-year, $3.7 million grant for his research on developing robust multimodal artificial intelligence for primary open-angle glaucoma prognosis, according to a July 17 announcement.

The funding will support efforts to create trustworthy AI technologies aimed at improving ophthalmology care and advancing earlier identification of patients who are at high risk for vision loss.

Primary open-angle glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The project seeks to develop robust multimodal AI models that combine fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), visual field testing, and clinical data to predict glaucoma progression and assist clinical decision-making. The initiative emphasizes both predictive performance and clinical usability with the goal of facilitating real-world implementation.

The research involves collaborations among investigators from the University of Minnesota, Weill Cornell Medicine, and Washington University in St. Louis.
